Alberta & Texas-based Detechtion, a tech company focused on the Oil & Gas sector, has acquired EZ Ops, another company in the sector and also primarily based in Alberta. The Tech Factor spoke to the team to find out details about the development.
Detechtion Technologies, a Canadian Oil & Gas sector focused company has announced the acquisition of EZ Ops, another tech company operating in the sector. Both organizations have a presence in Alberta, with Detechtion operating an office out of Calgary. EZ Ops has much of its staff based in Alberta (Edmonton and Calgary) as a remote operation. Detechtion also has offices in Texas, California, and Australia. In an interaction with The Tech Factor, Tim Lozier, VP of Marketing at Detechtion shared further details.
Lozier told The Tech Factor that both companies operate in the Oil and Gas sector and have some of the largest operators in Canada as customers. Detechtion serves these customers mainly with a leading asset-performance management solution. EZ Ops, on the other hand, specializes in field ops and logistics management software for the sector. It uses AI-driven intelligence to prioritize tasks, increase output, and guarantee compliance. In the news, the company mentioned that it sees a rising demand for data-driven and AI-powered field service management systems. The AI capabilities can give operations teams the information and insight needed to prioritize field work and increase worker productivity.
Detechtion aiming to offer the most comprehensive product for Oil & Gas
Detechtion was founded in 1998 by Alan Taylor and his son Brian in Calgary, Alberta. The company expanded into the US market in 2002 and acquired Enbase LLC in 2016. In 2023, Resurgens Technology Partners invested in Detechtion. Through this acquisition, Detechtion aims to strengthen its position in the field service management space. The additional product capabilities would also complement its existing product called Fieldlink. Fieldlink assists producers and oilfield service providers with inspection, maintenance, chemical management, water hauling, and HSE tasks.
While making the announcement, Chris Smith, CEO of Detechtion, shed light on the synergies among the two companies. He highlighted that EZ Ops has integrated its field service and logistics capabilities into an AI-driven mobile solution. These can deliver a unique opportunity to innovate for Detechtion’s customers. Smith added that EZ Ops’ cutting-edge product for field operations management also extends AI technology to their existing solutions. In fact, Detechtion evaluated a number of field service management solutions in collaboration with Resurgens, its investor. In the end, they concluded that EZ Ops provides the most distinctive and differentiating product in the market.
The CEO and founder of EZ Ops, Brandon Ambrose, shared his excitement to join Detechtion. He said that as EZ Ops expanded, it recognized that offering a wide solution range will benefit its clients more. Therefore, with Detechtion products, he looked forward to providing one of the most comprehensive solutions for the Oil & Gas sector.
Ambrose originally founded Reliance Production Optimization, a service-based organization specializing in oilfield operations. In 2015, he founded EZ Ops to support teams like his, and provide operators a shared information hub for streamlined communication and reporting. In 2022, EZ Ops Acquired Drift Technological Solutions and Payload to expand their offering in field operations and fleet management.
Acquisition deal details not disclosed by the company
The company did not disclose specifics about relative revenue or customer base of the two entities. However, Lozier shared that EZ Ops currently has about 25-30 employees and Detechtion about 60-65 employees. The EZ Ops team is based in Canada, with about 75% located in Alberta. Detechtion has employees throughout the US, Canada and Australia. Majority of that is split between Texas and Calgary, with rest in California or Australia, and some remote.
Given the focus on Oil & Gas, Alberta becomes the obvious location for both teams. It’s worth noting though that there has been clean energy initiatives in the province, like Eavor Technologies & Orennia. There have also been other steps to drive innovation in Alberta, such as the recent University of Alberta Innovation Fund.
Detechtion has not disclosed the financial details of the acquisition deal. But Lozier mentioned to The Tech Factor that after the acquisition, Smith will remain as the combined company’s CEO. Additionally, Ambrose will assume the position of Strategic Advisor to the same.
After the acquisition, EZ Ops has become a part of Detechtion in terms of a corporate entity. However, the team expects minimal changes in EZ Ops as it integrates into the Detechtion team. Lozier highlighted that EZ Ops customers will still retain the same services, resources, and teams as part of their investment in EZ Ops’ solutions. Moreover, in the near term, the EZ Ops name and its products will be retained. In the future though, further decisions will be taken to retain the best of both organizations with an eye to a long-term strategy of innovation.
