Ryan Reynolds invests in Canadian fintech firm, Nuvei, and believes that Canadian tech companies deserve more attention. The Montreal-based fintech company recently announced the Canadian actor and entrepreneur’s investment. Nuvei is a NASDAQ-listed public fintech company that provides payment solutions to businesses. Reynolds’ investment group, Maximum Effort Ventures, made the investment.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Ryan to the Nuvei family. We’re a global company but extremely proud of our Canadian roots and values, so to have one of the most internationally recognizable Canadians, as well as an entrepreneur with such renowned business acumen, join our investors is a privilege.”

Phil Fayer, Nuvei’s Chair and Chief Executive Officer

Nuvei, founded in 2003, offers a variety of global payment services. These include e-commerce payment processing, direct payments, and alternative payments. The company has experienced significant growth in recent years and has expanded its services to over 200 markets globally. Regardless of where they are in the globe or how they pay, Nuvei links online retailers with their customers.

Nuvei is expanding geographically while also creating new use cases for its technology. The company has introduced local acquisition capabilities in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia as part of its efforts to increase market share in both LATAM and APAC.

Ryan Reynolds invests in a diverse range of businesses

Reynolds, best known for his role in the Deadpool franchise, has been actively involved in various business ventures in recent years. He launched Maximum Effort Ventures in 2018, which has invested in a range of companies, including Mint Mobile, a US-based wireless service provider, and MatchaBar, a New York-based beverage company. In addition, the actor has also invested in Wealthsimple, 1Password, Aviation American Gin and Wrexham Football Club.

“I know about as much about fintech as I did about gin or mobile a few years ago. But Nuvei is impressive. The leadership team is exceedingly intelligent and hard-working and it’s about time a Canadian company got the type of attention American tech companies do.”

“I know nothing about fintech. Thank God, I’m not running the company,” Reynolds said to CNBC. He referred to the action as “Canada-flexing,” saying that while many others are avoiding fintech, Nuvei is one company that is worth pursuing.
