XPRIZE has made its first international foray with the launch of XPRIZE Canada Hub at the University of Calgary (UCalgary), a $10 million and five-year initiative. The Tech Factor digs out the details.
In a significant move towards fostering global innovation, XPRIZE has planted its first international flag at University of Calgary (UCalgary). The new XPRIZE Canada Hub, launched on May 6, marks a $10 million and five-year initiative to engage Canadian innovators. This move extends XPRIZEโs global footprint and adds to Alberta and Calgary’s pull for problem-solving startups and entrepreneurial energy.
XPRIZE is a renowned non-profit organization behind some of the worldโs most ambitious incentive competitions to solve humanityโs most-pressing challenges. For over three decades, XPRIZE has funded radical innovation by designing multi-year, high-impact competitions that incentivize scientific and technological advancements. Its prizes have addressed fields as varied as carbon capture, ocean health, literacy, as well as AI. Now, with its first international hub in Calgary, XPRIZE finally aims to create a localized nucleus of global collaboration.
Both provincial and municipal partners have provided the financial backing for the hub. Alberta Ministry of Technology and Innovation contributed $1.5 million. In addition, the Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund (OCIF) contributed another $1.5 million. The funding supports the five-year roadmap of the hubโs operations. The launch event at UCalgaryโs Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking brought together over 180 guests. These included in particular government representatives, innovation leaders, and economic development officials.
XPRIZE: A global model, new local homes
Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight in 1927, which earned him the $25,000 Orteig Prize, was the inspiration for the XPRIZE Foundation. In 1996, Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, an entrepreneur who was interested in space and encouraged competition, established the XPRIZE. In fact, its initial goal was to establish a comparable contest for private space flight.
The first XPRIZE was the Ansari XPRIZE for Suborbital Spaceflight, launched in 1996 with a prize of US$10 million. Anousheh Ansari, an Iranian-American engineer, entrepreneur, and the first female private space explorer, sponsored that XPRIZE. She currently serves as the CEO of XPRIZE, and was also there to make the announcement.
โAs we aim to expand XPRIZEโs global impact, our Hubs will play a pivotal role in fostering connections with innovators worldwide to address the most urgent challenges facing humanity. The University of Calgary is the ideal premier partner for the XPRIZE Canada Hub with its strong commitment to research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Together we will build a strong startup ecosystem to build scalable solutions toward a better future for all.โ
Anousheh Ansari, CEO of XPRIZE
Expanding XPRIZEโs physical presence is now a key strategy for the organization to unlock deeper connections with both innovators and ecosystems. It believes that the Hubs will indeed power the next era of global problem-solving. Each XPRIZE Hub is designed to convene stakeholders across sectors โ academia, startups, industry, and government. They will act as launchpads for moonshot ideas.
XPRIZE Canada Hub: Why University of Calgary?
The establishment of the Canada Hub is more than just a feather in the cap for UCalgary. It undoubtedly signifies another recognition of Canadaโs role in global innovation. And unquestionably provides new opportunities for homegrown talent to scale their ideas with international backing.
Over the past five years, University of Calgary has especially earned a distinction as Canadaโs top university for startup creation. Its reputation for research excellence and its vibrant innovation ecosystem positioned it as a partner capable of operationalizing the hubโs bold ambitions.
โBeing selected as the home of the XPRIZE Canada Hub is a powerful affirmation of our leadership in innovation and entrepreneurial thinking. We look forward to the world-changing ideas that will emerge from this collaboration.โ
Dr. Ed McCauley, president and vice-chancellor of UCalgary
Indeed, Canadian teams have already made their mark in past XPRIZE competitions. One of the standout participants is UCalgary alum Madison Savilow, co-founder of Carbon Upcycling. The startup was a finalist and X-Factor Award recipient in the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE, which ran from 2015 to 2021. In this case, that XPRIZE competition focused on converting COโ emissions into useful products. Savilowโs success highlights the kind of transformative work that can emerge from the UCalgary innovation system.
It’s worth noting that there have been several UCalgary spinoff companies, likeย Carbomat,ย Circle CVI and TOSSA Sustainability Solutions,ย who have successfully translated research to impact in their sectors of energy, health and deep tech.
A shot in the arm for Alberta’s innovation economy
The Calgary-based hub aims to connect Canadian innovators to the broader XPRIZE network, support the design and execution of prize competitions, and help de-risk new technologies for adoption and investment. The new hub also aligns closely with Calgaryโs broader economic strategy โ one focused on attracting high-impact industries and fostering a diversified, innovation-driven economy.
โThe establishment of the XPRIZE Canada Hub at the University of Calgary is a remarkable addition to Alberta’s thriving tech sector. With our world-class researchers, vibrant startup community, and substantial venture capital investments, this hub will further accelerate innovation and solidify Alberta’s position as a leader in technological advancements.โ
Hon. Nate Glubish, Minister of Technology and Innovation of Alberta
University of Calgaryโs Vice-President (Research), Dr. William Ghali, emphasized the hubโs overall national scope. He highlighted that this win wasn’t just for Calgary. The hub can be a catalyst for innovators across the country, reinforcing Canadaโs leadership in finding solutions to global problems.
The City of Calgary’s Mayor, Jyoti Gondek, was also at the event and mentioned that Calgary was a city of visionaries. She felt that Calgary’s collaboration with XPRIZE enhances the city’s inclusive development.
Road ahead for XPRIZE Canada Hub
With the launch now official, the XPRIZE Canada Hub at UCalgary begins its work: connecting Canadian teams to the XPRIZE pipeline, enabling cross-disciplinary collaboration, and creating a testing ground for moonshot ideas. Itโs not just about technology, but to build a future where innovation is more inclusive, scalable, and impactful.
Due to being the first of what is expected to be a series of international hubs, the Calgary site sets a precedent. It demonstrates how global organizations can embed themselves locally to unlock fresh talent, foster diversity of thought, and drive solutions from the ground up. And in doing so, it places Calgary โ and Canada โ further on the global innovation map.
